As I recall the only time Puerto Ricans voted for statehood was after defaulting on their loan payments and the resulting collapse of their economy. Even then the so called affirmative vote turnout was less than a majority of those eligible to vote. It appears that Puerto Ricans don’t want to lose their cultural and governmental independence but desire a financial bailout. There has been — and continues to be — blatant incompetence and corruption by Puerto Rican officials. Why should the U.S. federal government force the people of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico to become a state? Puerto Ricans who reside in any state have full voting rights. Those living on the island can’t vote for the POTUS and don’t have representation in Congress just like the other territories.
