"Because what happens when the Democratic candidate wins the popular vote by eight million, yet overt voter suppression gives the electoral college to Trump?"

It's time to "fix" the electoral college. Not by the National Popular Vote Compact which will never reach the required 270 from state legislatures. Not by an amendment to the Constitution to abolish or modify the electoral college - there have been more than 700 attempts since 1800 and all have failed. And not by states proportionally allocating electoral votes based on statewide popular vote, which too frequently would result in the House of Representatives electing the President. The fix is the one Maine used in the 2020 election - utilizing the instant runoff capability of ranked choice voting to ensure the candidate who receives a state's electoral votes is a statewide majority vote winner.
