The trend for both major parties seems to be to promote extremism to reduce the number of swing voters. This is facilitated by the states' implementation of single choice plurality voting. In my opinion, replacing small, single member districts with large, multi-member districts filled via proportional representation would significantly reduce the animosity between political parties.
