The U.S. continues to meddle in the affairs of sovereign countries under the guise of some humanitarian justification. In reality the objective is to maintain or increase our economic stability. In 1973 OPEC placed an embargo on the U.S. in response to its support of Israel and the Yom Kippur War. Our government and the general public then realized how vulnerable we were to external control of petroleum availability. It is my opinion that the main objective of American intervention in the Middle East has always been to ensure reliable export of oil to the U.S. It was never about starting the first step in a domino-like birth of democracy in the Middle East as George W. Bush declared.

With new extraction techniques the U.S. has progressed from oil import dependent to self sufficient to a major exporter. However, the cheap and easy oil resources have been depleted. Oil extraction will continue to increase in cost and difficulty. I encourage the U.S. “big oil” corporations to team with electric power plant construction corporations to develop now an environmentally friendly electricity generating capability using a resource that will be available for the next 1,000 years. One candidate is geothermal sourced power plants.
