The Working Families Party (WFP) is a minor party with about 55,000 members who can also be members of any other political party. It is only recognized by the states of Connecticut, New York and Oregon as a political party with statewide ballot access. Registration as a WFP member in a state is not required to vote in membership voting processes. The Working Families Party National Committee — which includes representatives from WFP state chapters and local branches as well as national progressive and movement leaders — got 50% of the total vote share. Current WFP members and grassroots supporters also received 50% of the total vote share. A WFP member is anyone who pays dues of $10/month or $120 in the past year. A WFP supporter is anyone who has previously engaged with WFP and signed up to WFP’s email or text list. Non residents, non citizens and even minors can sign up and vote. The candidates considered were Cory Booker, Julián Castro, Bill de Blasio, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. Early endorsement of a candidate by a fairly insignificant minor party attracts much more attention than at a later date.
