This article seems to be focused on gentrification benefits to a neighborhood with little regard for what happens to long time residents who can no longer afford to stay. In our nearby middle size city small rental homes in poor repair are being purchased and bulldozed to be replaced with expensive condos. Displaced residents temporarily live in “dive” motels until being relocated to away from downtown subsidized housing without convenient public transportation for individuals to continue employment downtown. Many of the displaced end up dependent on welfare programs. When an area is considered for gentrification (denser and more expensive housing), city planners should require a designated area for low income housing.
